This time of year is filled with excitement, busy work days (where did the day go?!?), lots of conversations and ringing phones. Many of us have just kicked off the start of a new school year or it is right around the corner. Our campuses are a buzz with students, faculty and staff, and activities. This time of year is never easy balancing all of the “to dos”, appointments and meetings, to take time for yourself, and keep our stress levels in check. But I know you are each up to the challenge and I thank you for choosing to serve our students.
This summer I had the pleasure to attend our ILASFAA Leadership Retreat and met 20 new ILASFAA Leaders, a great group of professional working in Financial Aid. Many attendees are already participating on ILASFAA committees this fall and their energy and excitement for helping students is contagious. The retreat offered team building activities, a leadership presentation on building your strengths as a leader, learning about ILASFAA and our association’s structure and goals, and making connections to continue our professional growth. The group was really a lot of fun to get to know and if they are like my leadership group from some years ago, maybe some friends for life!
New workshops and events for ILASFAA members are right around the corner. The ILASFAA Fall Workshops will be held on October 25th and November 8th. Check the ILASFAA website for calendar updates, workshop information, and announcements for the Reality Store event and school selection. Our conference team is already hard at work on plans for our annual Spring conference along with our sector VPs and Regional Coordinators gathering input from each of their areas. The membership team is working hard to connect with schools to renew and build our ILASFAA members to take advantage of these trainings, events and conference opportunities. Let us know what sessions and information is most useful to helping you and your office throughout the year.
Another great training opportunity is the upcoming MASFAA Conference October 6th – 9th, 2013 right nearby in Indiana. October is a great time to head to Indianapolis and participate as MASFAA celebrates 50 years. Check out the MASFAA Conference site at the http://masfaaweb.org/docs/conferences/2013/index.html.
The work that we do may not always come with a lot of thank yous. Cherish the thank yous received and know that together we have helped and will continue to assist thousands of students within our state and beyond. Keep your chin up, smile, and laugh with your co-workers when you can! It will make your day better and for those around you too! So thank you to each of you, for the work you do, your special efforts, the extra steps, and your time. Continue to pay it forward today and make each of your student connections count.
Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day holiday.
